We X The Internet

2018 was not a phenomenal year for the internet. Privacy concerns, data breaches, harassment, and fake news dominated the headlines this year. And this lead to a lot of us the industry to have mixed feelings about everything Online. So how does an award show which honors outstanding online achievements address these feelings? Well, we tackle them head on.

We ran through 6 traits describing how we relate to the internet right now: We DEFINE CONSUME CREATE FEAR WORSHIP LOVE the Internet. While not all of these are positive, they did feel accurate. To take the edge off some of the less-than-flattering characteristics we implemented an irreverent design direction which mashed up old school internet elements with modern oddball elements.

The results were fantastic. By acknowledging the shortcomings and challenges of the medium we celebrate with levity we opened the conversation to our audience about the state of the industry. The campaign provided the authenticity needed for these times when a more "ONLINE IS AWESOME!1!!" message would’ve fallen flat.

We Speak Your Language

The goal for The 5th Annual Lovie Awards (as determined by the presenting sponsor Google) was to reinforce the show’s core mission to celebrate the best online work from the European internet. So we focused on The Lovie Awards’ unique way of judging the entries: All work is reviewed in its native language. The tagline “We Speak Your Language” was then translated to 7 languages eligible for the show and integrated into the campaign.

This was a tough time for a show in London. Brexit just narrowly passed and the tech community was especially distraught. Not addressing the topic in the show felt like it would be an oversight. So we integrated it into the fabric of the campaign. Riffing off the motto of the EU (United in Diversity), we echoed the opinion of the vast majority of those who work in the European tech industry: We’ll stand together regardless of whatever happens with all these "Leave" morons.

The Internet Meets the Big Screen

Design Partner: Degrau

This campaign required a different direction than those done previously. Due to extensive remodeling delays at our scheduled venue, the event was moved. The new location did not have the privacy we had at past events. It was held in a multi-floor movie theater, The Picture House, in central London. As a result we wanted the campaign tagline to be clear to an uniformed viewer as to what was happening. Hence: The Internet Meets the Big Screen.

To further embrace the environment, we created an opening video which riffed on the standard movie theater rules of conduct but updated them for an Internet award show.
